Fantasy Realm Shattered Sky is a winding up and a winding down. An unrelenting orb of grief, a cocoon or chrysalis creaking and falling, suffocating inside of time. A moth in overdrive, fluttering in a flashlight's beam. The album's passion comes both from its grander moments of thrashing and the intimate expectation it sets by showing its bones: a rusty organ, a shaky voice memo recorded in a moving car, a solitary and quaking guitar string fading to black.
Blood Orphans evades the saccharine with Shattered Sky without losing the devotional quality that underline earlier releases. In this case, with great nobility and distortion, Sorrow Summers speaks from the center of a misplaced orb of magic tricks, demonic hankerchiefs, and bad news.
With collaborators like audio engineer M. Deetz (whose associations include Friendship, Joan Kelsey, and Yours Are The Only Ears) and the siren-esque vocalist Yvonne Chazal (of Raleigh, NC's Truth Club), Blood Orphans' latest release is a study of grief and a texture-driven phantasmagoria that belongs in a computer and a cabin. / Old Fort, NC between January 2021 and October 2024, on a laptop paid for by a COVID-19 stimulus check. The tracks were sent off for mixing/mastering days after Hurricane Helene hit the mountainous region of the south.
